Alumni Profile – Jason Bramburger (BA ’11)
Jason Bramburger graduated from Nipissing University in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a minor in Computer Science.
Growing up in the Ottawa-Valley, Nipissing University was well known to Jason and his family. With his sights set on becoming an educator, Bramburger originally began his studies at Nipissing through the Orientation to Teaching program however, was later inspired to attend graduate school instead of pursuing a teaching degree.
“My experience at Nipissing was great,” shared Bramburger. “My undergraduate mentor was Murat Tuncali, and he really helped me decide on going to grad school. He supervised my honours research project and really nurtured my curiosity about all things dynamical systems and chaos (my current field of expertise).”
He shared that he loved the small class sizes that Nipissing offers and that he’s made friends in his program that he’s still close with now.
Bramburger is currently a member of the Nipissing University Alumni Advisory Board (NUAAB) having joined in 2022. NUAAB provides support for alumni programs, communications, events, branch and chapter outreach, scholarships, and other initiatives.
“I wanted to give back to a university that has given me so much,” he said. “I want to be involved in any way that I can and this allowed me to make a difference.”
Bramburger’s desire to give back to Nipissing is also what inspired him to make his first monetary gift to the university. “Nipissing offered me very generous scholarships when entering, without which I likely would not have been able to attend,” he shared, “and so I want to contribute so that other students can have the same experience I had.”
To Bramburger, being a Nipissing Alumnus means that he was part of a small university that is focused on educating students from a diversity of backgrounds.
“I am proud to have gone to Nipissing.”
After receiving bachelor’s degree at Nipissing, Bramburger continued his studies at the University of Ottawa where he completed his master’s and PhD. He then continued as a visiting fellow at Brown University, the University of Victoria, and the University of Washington. He is now a Professor of Applied Mathematics at Concordia University and continues to work in the area he was mentored in by Murat Tuncali back in 2010/2011 for his honours project.
