Associate Teacher Award Winner 2018
Laurie Clayton, above right, is this year’s local recipient of the Schulich School of Education Associate Teacher Award, as nominated by her teacher candidate and selected by a committee of professors at Nipissing University. In her nomination letter, Laurie’s teacher candidate highlighted her extensive community work, fundraising efforts, coaching, and extracurricular activity organization. Laurie uses technology and hands-on activities to engage her learners in and outside of the classroom. Her teacher candidate stated that “this class was without a doubt the busiest class I have been in, but it was certainly the most rewarding.” In communicating with Callie Mady, the Associate Dean of the Schulich School of Education, pictured above, Laurie shared that she volunteers as an associate teacher to provide a safe environment for teacher candidates to make mistakes and grow while in return learning from each teacher candidate’s knowledge, personality, and experiences. Laurie has been teaching with the Near North District School Board since 2000 and is presently teaching grades 5/6 at Silver Birches Elementary School.
