Biidaaban Youth Group (BYG) is an after school homework help program for Indigenous youth in Kindergarten to grade 6. Nipissing University student volunteer tutors support youth with academics and host recreational, social and artistic activities once a week for 15 weeks, between October 2019 and March 2020.
Transportation is provided free of charge for youth from their school to the program. Parents are responsible for pick-up at 5pm.
Program hours and dates
3pm to 5pm on the following 15 Thursdays:
2019: October 3, 10, 31 / November 6, 13, 20
2020: January 9, 16, 23, 30 / February 6, 13 / March 5, 12, 26
Registration opens Thursday, September 19th. Children must attend one of the above schools to participate. Parents are responsible for child pick-up at 5 pm. Niminowaazmin (Year-end celebration)
Niminowaazmin is the Office of Indigenous Initiatives' year-end celebration for Biidaaban youth programs including Biidaaban Youth Group and Biidaaban Academic Support, honouring the successes of student volunteers, youth and their families.
Niminowaazmin is an Ojibwe (Anishinaabe) word that means "we are celebrating".
Activities include a luncheon, traditional teachings, cultural and artistic activities, a professional portrait booth, games, door prizes and giveaways.
When: Sunday, March 29, 2020 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
Where: Main Cafeteria, Nipissing University, 100 College Drive
Parking is free.
