Nipissing U invites community to discover research this March

North Bay, ON – March is Research Month at Nipissing University, a time to celebrate the impact of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research locally, nationally, and internationally.

Nipissing invites the community to “Discover Research” through a series of events throughout the month including the popular NU360 Speaker Night, the Undergraduate Research Conference, and Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition.

Nipissing University is rich with talented faculty and student researchers whose work is continuously making an impact locally and globally,” shared Dr. Barbi Law, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at Nipissing University. “We are thrilled to invite the community to discover the diversity of research happening at Nipissing.”

Kicking off Research Month on Thursday, March 2, at 5:30 p.m. is the NU360 Speaker Night at the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) Student Centre.  This free event will feature a series of six-minute faculty presentations offering a sampling of the diverse research taking place at the university, all centred around the theme of “Research and Community.”

Topics will include:

  • Virtual communities for people affected by rarer dementias: Characterizing spaces for connection and repose - Dr. Mary Pat Sullivan
  • Equine Assisted Learning: Can it Help Survivors of Sexual Trauma? - Dr. Kristina Karvinen
  • The big picture: Patterns of disturbance and dynamics across forest landscapes - Dr. Jeff Dech
  • Lessons from the North: Creating a Micro-Credential with the Nbisiing Nishnaabeg - Dr. Cindy Peltier
  • Reasons of high prevalence of contraceptive withdrawal (coitus interruptus) - Dr. Amir Erfani
  • Teachers Making a Difference in the Community - Dr. Kristen Ferguson & Dr. Melissa Corrente
  • A Changing North: Untangling how humans and climate change alter northern Ontario water quality - Dr. Colin McCarter

Next up is the 16th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference which will take place at the Nipissing Theatre and the NUSU Student Centre from Friday, March 24 to Saturday, March 25. The Undergraduate Research Conference celebrates the contributions of undergraduate research at Nipissing University and across Ontario while providing an opportunity for students to present their research and engage in scholarly debate.

This year’s conference will feature a keynote address by Dr. Susan Srigley, Chair and Professor of Religions and Cultures at Nipissing University, on Friday, March 24 at 6 p.m. in the Nipissing Theatre. Dr. Srigley will share how death education has enhanced and deepened her community involvement and why she’s passionate about teaching death education at the post-secondary level.

The annual 3-Minute Thesis (3MT®) Competition will close out Research Month on Thursday, March 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Nipissing University Theatre (F213). 3MT is a university-wide competition that challenges graduate students to present their research in just three minutes to a panel of non-specialist judges in an engaging, compelling way. This internationally recognized competition was developed by the University of Queensland in 2008 to promote effective communication of research and has grown to include over 42 Canadian graduate schools.
