International cuisine and stories at Nipissing Brantford

Nipissing University welcomes everyone to the Homecoming International Lunch, celebrating a decade of education in Brantford, on Saturday, October 20, from noon – 2 p.m. at 50 Wellington Street.

Culinary inspiration for the Homecoming International Lunch comes from the countries that Nipissing students have taught in as part of their international teaching practicum: China, Italy and Kenya.

Guests will be able to talk to alumni currently teaching abroad via skype, and international educational organizations, such as Protocol Education, will be in attendance to provide insight to students interested in teaching overseas.

The day will also include groups from Laurier University who have experience teaching and volunteering overseas.

Leah MacCharles, a graduate of Nipissing’s Concurrent Education program and Master of Education program, will be speaking about her experiences in Kenya and Sweden at the lunch. 

“Teaching in rural Kenya was an unforgettable experience. It heightened my passion for social justice in education and inspired me to pursue graduate studies to explore the concept further,” she said.  “In the Masters program, I received another phenomenal opportunity when I presented at an international Leadership and Ethics Conference in Umea, Sweden. These opportunities enriched my student experience tremendously and have given me a competitive edge in securing employment.”

“I’m excited to be back in Brantford to help organize this exciting event,” said Shawna Carroll, a graduate of Nipissing’s Concurrent Education program and the university’s Anniversary Coordinator in Brantford. “It’s going to be wonderful to enjoy some delicious food while sharing and learning about international teaching experiences.  This will be an especially invaluable experience for any students, alumni or community members who are interested in teaching overseas.”

The Homecoming International Lunch is open to everyone.  To attend, you must register by October 15. Food tickets cost $5 per three international food samples. Food tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

This year marks Nipissing’s 10th anniversary in Brantford. In that time, enrollment has grown from 29 students in the first year to almost 1,000 students today. The university is proud to play a leading role in the City’s growth. This year Nipissing University also celebrates its 20th anniversary as an independent degree granting institution.
