Nipissing U graduate students take on Three Minute Thesis challenge

North Bay, ON – Nipissing University invites the community to help close out Research Month at its annual Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT®) held in the Nipissing University Theatre (F213, 100 College Drive, North Bay, ON) on Thursday, March 30 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

3MT® is a university-wide competition for graduate students in which participants have three minutes to present their research to a panel of non-specialist judges. The challenge is to present complex research material in an engaging, compelling way.

“The Three Minute Thesis competition is a fun way to share the diverse graduate research happening at Nipissing,” shared Dr. Barbi Law, Interim Dean of Graduate Studies and Research at Nipissing University. “While summarizing complex research in under three minutes in a way that’s easily understood can be difficult, our graduate students are always up for the challenge.”

Prizes include $500 for first place and $250 for both the runner up and recipient of the People’s Choice Award. Competitors will be judged on their communication style, comprehension, and engagement. The winner will move on to compete at the regional competition at Queen’s University on May 17.

Presentations will include:

• Kristian Johnson, Master of Arts in History – Into the Vortex: Why Serbian soldiers and militias participated in extra military violence during the Bosnian War of 1992-1995
• Shahla Ziamanesh, Master of Science in Kinesiology – Quantifying hand-arm vibration transmissibility during pneumatic impact wrench use in fatiguing tasks
• Jacqueline Girard, Master of Arts in History – Hidden from Society and Photographs: The Experiences of Unwed Mothers in the Hôpital de la Miséricorde, PQ from 1950 to 1970
• Christopher Godfrey, PhD in Education – Action research: A path to more effective technology-related learning experiences?
• Pankti Patel, Master of Science in Kinesiology – Organized sports participation: Exploring lived experience of adolescents with Down Syndrome and their parents
• Madison Small, Master of Arts in History – The Maids and Men of Kent: How mutual communal changes marked the Reformation for ordinary people in Kent County, England
• Kaitlynn Mars, Master of Arts in History – From the Shadows of the Cold War: The Myth of the Clean German Army
• Alexander Maycock, Master of Science in Kinesiology – Nitric Oxide: Can it be Beet?

3MT® was initially developed by the University of Queensland in Australia in 2008 to promote effective communication of research. What started with only a few institutions, has evolved into a huge success for Canadian institutions, having over 42 of Canada’s graduate schools participate.

The Three Minute Thesis competition provides graduate students with an opportunity to refine skills that can be applied after graduation to diverse career paths.
