Lakers gear up for 2nd Annual Shoot for Change Game
North Bay, ON – This Saturday, the Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE) in partnership with Lakers Basketball will host the 2nd Annual With1VoiceNight: Shoot for Change Game at the R.J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre against 705 rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs. Created by NUBASE Co-Founder and President, Taijon Eccleston-Graham, Shoot for Change raises funds for BIPOC student bursaries at Nipissing University and offers student-athletes a platform to advocate for marginalized communities.
Last year’s inaugural game raised over $18,000 and led to the establishment of the Warren Lindsay Bursary for BIPOC students, named after Warren Lindsay, Director of Services with the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU).
“This event offers an amazing opportunity to use the platform of sports to address the ongoing issue of the lack of financial opportunities for students of colour,” shared Graham. “Last year’s Shoot for Change game was a huge success, resulting in the creation of the first BIPOC student bursary offered at Nipissing University. We look forward to building on that momentum at this year’s event.”
Fans will have the opportunity to take part in a raffle for a chance to win two Toronto Raptors tickets and one night accommodation in Toronto as well as other prizes. Two authentic Toronto Raptors jerseys signed by Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes will also be auctioned off and Shoot for Change commemorative T-shirts can be purchased at the game for $15 plus tax with all proceeds to the Warren Lindsay Bursary.
“Nipissing University is proud to once again host this incredible student-led initiative that is leading change across the province,” states Dr. Kevin Wamsley, President & Vice Chancellor, Nipissing University. “I encourage everyone to come out and cheer on our Lakers and show their support for this important cause.”
Five other Ontario University Athletics (OUA) teams will be participating in Shoot for Change games this year including Laurentian University, Ontario Tech, University of Guelph, University of Windsor and Wilfrid Laurier University.
Last year, Graham was recognized for his efforts by the OUA with the Ken Shields Award in the OUA's East Division, an award handed out yearly to a player who exhibits outstanding achievement in basketball, academics and community involvement.
Tip off for the women’s game is at 6 p.m. with the men’s game following at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, alumni, and students, and free for children under 12 and students who present their student ID. Tickets may be purchased at the door or online in advance.
