NU students to be recognized for anti-racism efforts
On Wednesday, March 23, Nipissing University will join the North Bay community in commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD). Nipissing University is part of the local IDERD Committee committed to the elimination of racial discrimination and racism on our campus and within our community.
The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was established by the United Nations in 1966 to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960. It is observed every March 21st to bring the world community together to increase its efforts in the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination and racism (United Nations, Resolution 2142, XX1).
Celebrating Students Who Make a Difference
The Recognition of Nominees Day, formerly known as Annual Evening of Applause, is held in conjunction with the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21st). This local event is a partnership between the North Bay and Area Local Immigration Partnership, North Bay & District Multicultural Centre (NBDMC), all four school boards, Canadore College and Nipissing University. Each year a new inductee to the Human Rights Hall of Fame is named and students are celebrated during this event with recognition of their achievements and efforts to end racial discrimination.
The Recognition of Nominees Day will take place on Wednesday March 23, 2022, at 1 p.m. live on YouTube. For those unable to watch the live event, a recording can be viewed on the North Bay & District Multicultural Centre website.
Two Nipissing University students, Tyrell Chambers and Deven Doodnath, will be recognized during the event with a “Student Who Made a Difference” Award for their contributions to making the Nipissing campus and the North Bay community more inclusive. Tyrell and Deven are both executive members of the Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE) and have been instrumental in organizing several important initiatives on campus and in the community including the high school mentorship program, ‘MENtal Strength’ men’s mental health forum, and most recently the Shoot for Change Anti-Racism Basketball fundraiser to support the creation of the BIPOC bursaries. The Nipissing community is proud of the contributions of both students and the difference they are making on campus and in the community.
