Event will feature latest research findings on rare and young onset dementia

Nipissing University will be holding an online knowledge exchange event on the topic of rare and young onset dementia on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. This live, virtual event builds on last year's Knowledge Exchange, and is part of public engagement activities of the Rare Dementia Support (RDS) Impact Study, a five-year study funded jointly by the UK Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The event will feature an update on findings emerging from the Rare Dementia Support (RDS) Impact Study as well as presentations exploring clinical symptoms and obtaining a diagnosis for three rare forms of dementia: posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), young onset Alzheimer's disease (YOAD), and Lewy body dementia (LBD). There will also be a presentation by YouQuest, an Alberta-based grassroots organization that provides rehabilitative support interventions for people living with young onset dementia.

A rare dementia diagnosis brings with it a set of unique and complex challenges, yet there is a widespread lack of understanding and shortage of dedicated resources to support people affected by these conditions.

The free event will be held on Zoom and will be of interest to people living with dementia, family care partners, health and social care practitioners, students, and researchers.
