Nipissing Participating in International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) was established by the United Nations in 1966 to commemorate the Sharpeville Massacre of 1960. It is observed every March 21 to bring the world community together to increase its efforts in the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination and racism (United Nations, Resolution 2142, XX1).

Nipissing University is part of the local IDERD Committee committed to the elimination of racial discrimination and racism on our campus and within our community.

North Bay is the only community in Canada that has participated consistently in the celebration of IDERD and will continue doing so this year in May 2020 with a culmination of events during the Evening of Applause.

The Nipissing community is encouraged to participate in activities to commemorate IDERD by submitting entries for the following categories:

• Students Who Make a Difference: Do you know a student who has made a positive impact on the institution? Contributed to making their community more inclusive? Shared their time to help a fellow student? Nominees must be a current student of Nipissing University. Deadline is noon on April 9.
• Anti-Racism Poster Contest: Topic: Sharing our similarities, Celebrating our Differences. Poster or artwork can be in any language. Please submit with translation. Digital artwork is acceptable.  Note: This year the contest is open to the North Bay community, Deadline is noon on April 9. 
• Human Rights Hall of Fame: Seeking nominations for those who have shown leadership in human rights or anti-racism activities locally, regionally, nationally or internationally. Deadline is noon on March 12.
