Sweet new initiative celebrates kindness and leadership

The Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) and North Bay business, SugarDaddy Cupcakes and Catering, have announced a sweet new collaboration: Sweetest Student of the Week.

This initiative sees students, community members, and Nipissing staff and faulty nominating students for recognition based on characteristics of being good student leaders and kind people.

Last week, John and Nathan Serran from SugarDaddy Cupcakes and Catering presented a certificate and four cupcakes to Michaela Adams, the inaugural winner of Sweetest Student of the Week.

The cupcakes were North Bay and Nipissing themed, utilizing the familiar Lakers Blue and Green.

"We are really excited to be partnering with John and Nathan on this. It is great that a local business is willing to help recognize the good work that our students do. We congratulate Michaela on this accolade," said Tyrel Somerville, NUSU vice-president communications.

Adams was nominated by her friend Emily Prevost.

"When I scrolled down on Facebook and saw the form I thought of Michaela immediately. She had helped a few people and had only just met them and I wanted to nominate her for being awesome," remarked Prevost. 

The initiative will continue throughout the year and any Nipissing University student can be nominated. 

"The goal is to highlight students who are making a change that maybe some people don't get to see. No matter how small the act it can make the biggest difference," said Sarah McGowan, NUSU director of communications.
