Nipissing heading to Ontario University Fair
It’s a critical time for university recruitment in Ontario this week, with more than 120,000 prospective students and their supporters visiting the Ontario Universities' Fair in downtown Toronto to learn more about Ontario universities and Nipissing University is ready.
Nipissing is sending a team of 68 people to share insights on how and why this university is such a fantastic place to learn and live. The team is made up of 14 faculty members, 14 students, one member of the Board of Governors, and 39 staffers representing recruiters, executives, admissions personnel and other key staff in various departments from financial aid and education placements to lab instructors and technology experts.
“The sense of community that exists at Nipissing is a real strength, and very attractive to many students. It definitely plays a role in our recruitment strategy,” said Valerie Edmunds, manager of student recruitment. “We strive to make one-on-one personal connections to discover personal interests and try to match those interests with what Nipissing offers. It’s our goal to get to know students so we can show them why Nipissing may be the best choice for their university career.”
For the third consecutive year, Nipissing is bucking the trend on giveaways at the fair, opting for philanthropy over trinkets. This year the university will donate $1 to the Wasa-Nabin Program through the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre (http://www.nbifc.org/wasa-nabin-program/) for every student who signs up to receive more information about Nipissing.
The Wasa- Nabin Program provides counseling, health, educational and cultural support to Indigenous youth at risk as a result of their life circumstances.
“As a university, we want to contribute to building strong communities. We all have a responsibility to make a positive difference. This promotion is reflective of the socially conscious culture that exists on campus and hopefully will help us attract and engage with like-minded students.” said Kelly Brown, manager marketing and communications.
Last year, the charity Breakfast for Learning received a $3,000 donation from Nipissing’s Ontario University Fair initiative.
The fair takes place September 22 - 24 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
The free three-day event gives next year's university hopefuls all the information they need to make an informed decision about where to apply, with first-hand accounts about university programs and campus life from professors, staff and current students.
