New Student Orientation a success
Going into university right out of high school can be an intimidating prospect. New Student Orientation (NSO) is designed to help new students get a head start on their first year at Nipissing University.300 first year students attended the event on campus last week, taking advantage of the opportunity to meet peers, future professors, and representatives from various support services and extracurricular organizations. The students and their supporters received tours of campus and residences, met with academic advisors, and registered for first year courses.
The NSO team estimates that more than 620 people visited the university and the city of North Bay for this orientation.
An event like this takes a well coordinated effort to pull off. 20 departments, 16 student volunteers and 30 faculty members participated to make NSO successful and meaningful to the newest class of Lakers.
“I have had the chance to help with NSO two years in a row and I absolutely love it,” said third year nursing student Erin Davis, who met with incoming students in the nursing simulation lab. “It can be nerve wracking starting somewhere new and this can add a lot of pressure when school rolls around. It is nice to have the opportunity to answer their questions and give sincere advice especially coming from a fellow student’s perspective.”
Talking about her own experience as a first year student at NSO, Davis was very positive. “Having the chance to tour through the labs and talk to professors and current students about not only the opportunities but also their experiences, allowed me to feel a sense of comfort and reassurance that Nipissing was the place for me,” she said. “I felt at home, and began to get excited for what my future at Nipissing would hold. Looking back to where I am today, I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made.”
NU will hold New Student Orientation for mature and transfer students onJuly 28 and 31, 2017. Lakers Orientation Week starts on August 26 with residence move-in day at each complex, and runs until September 8, 2017.
