Alumna earns international thesis award

Congratulations to Nipissing University graduate Dr. Tiffany Roberts on earning the Paul T. Begley Award (International Graduate Student Competition) from the Consortium for the Study of Leadership and Ethics in Education (CSLEE).Roberts earned the award on the strength of her dissertation, A Case Study: The School Experiences of Children with Life-Threatening Food-Induced Allergies and Anaphylaxis as Perceived by Children, Parents, Teachers, and a School Administrator.
The award will be presented on at the 22nd Annual Values and Leadership Conference held in Los Angeles, California, October 5-7, 2017.
Dr. Roberts earned her Master of Education and a PhD in Education degrees from Nipissing University’s Schulich School of Education. She also holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts from Trent University and a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University. Dr. Roberts currently works as a Curriculum Coordinator with the Rainbow District School Board.
“It is a tremendous honour to have my dissertation selected as the winner of the Paul T. Begley Award,” said Dr. Roberts. “My research is centred around the school experiences of students with life-threatening food-induced allergies and anaphylaxis. As a parent I have a keen interest in this topic as my daughter has lived with food allergies her whole life. As an educator with both school and system experiences, I recognize that there are many aspects of ethical leadership and decision-making that come into play when addressing the needs of students with life-threatening food allergies. I wanted to illuminate some of the physical, social, emotional and academic dimensions of life with food allergies and perhaps improve current supports in place in schools.”

This is important research that can positively impact our schools by providing a better understanding of what life is like for someone with a serious allergy and how schools can support those individuals.”
The Paul T. Begley Award is given annually to recently-completed masters or doctoral theses students for contributions to the field of values and leadership in education including K-12 and higher education.
Dr. Paul Begley founded CSLE in 1996 as a program centre of the University Council of Educational Administration (UCEA). He served as the executive director of CSLE International as well as CSLE Nipissing (NUCSLE) until he retired from the faculty of education at Nipissing University in 2011, and established CSLE as one of UCEA’s most productive program centres. Consequently, at the 2011 annual Values and Leadership Conference in Victoria, British Columbia, it was announced that CSLE would establish the Paul T. Begley International Thesis Award as an important legacy of his exemplary work in the area of values and educational leadership.?
