Academic Probation

What is Academic Probation?

Your Academic Standing is determined after a minimum of 18 credits have been attempted, at the end of the Fall/Winter term (May). If your cumulative average is between 50% - 59% you will be placed on academic probation.

What do I need to do if I am on Academic Probation?

If your cumulative average is between 50% - 54% you are required to develop an academic success plan prior to registering in courses for the next academic year.   A member of the Nipissing’s Academic Success Team will be in touch with you to develop a plan that connects you to services and supports your academic goals! If you have any questions, please contact asp@nipissingu.ca.

If your cumulative average is between 55% -59% we recommend you develop an academic success plan with a member of Nipissing’s Academic Success Team prior to registering in courses for the next academic year.  If you are interested in developing an academic success plan, please contact asp@nipissingu.ca.  We look forward to working with you!

What is an Academic Success Plan?

A member of the Academic Success Team will meet with you to discuss any challenges you have encountered on your academic journey and connect you with resources, staff, and strategies to help them achieve academic success. Together, we develop a plan to help you set and attain your academic and personal goals.

Visit the Academic Success Program website for more information and how to get connected.

How do I clear Academic Probation?

Your Academic Standing is determined after a minimum of 18 credits have been attempted, at the end of the Fall/Winter (May).  You will be removed from Academic Probation if your cumulative average is 60% or higher when your progress is reviewed in May.

If you are on academic probation and do not achieve a cumulative average of 60% when your progress is reviewed in May but do achieve a sessional average (average for the current academic year) of 63% or higher you can proceed on probation.

If you are on academic probation and do not achieve either a cumulative average of 60% or a 63% sessional average from the Fall/Winter will be required to withdraw.

Please review the Academic Calendar for more information.

What if I am unable to bring up my average?

Students will be required to withdraw from the University if they have a cumulative average below 60% for two consecutive academic years and their sessional average is below 63%; or if their cumulative average is below 50%.

If you are asked to withdraw from the University, you will be required to withdraw for one academic year. Students returning after a one year academic withdrawal will need to reapply to the university to reactivate their record.

Try to avoid waiting until you receive your final grade(s) to reach out for support. Throughout the year, keep an eye on the marks you receive for assignments and tests. If you are struggling to improve your grades, you’re encouraged to reach out to the support services listed above or the Academic Success Program.

I have been admitted to the University on Academic Probation. What does this mean?

If you have been admitted to the university on Academic Probation, your probation status will be assess at the end of the Fall/Winter academic year (May) if at least 18 credits have been attempted.

If your cumulative average is 60% or greater, the academic probation status will be removed.

If your average is between 50% and 59%, you will be allowed to continue on probation at a maximum of 18 credits and will be reassessed at the end of the following Fall/Winter academic year if at least total of 30 credits have been attempted.
