Nipissing is proud to celebrate the academic achievements of its graduates with The President’s Gold Medal. The President’s Gold Medal is awarded at convocation to full or part-time students that attain the highest academic average in all courses in their degree program.
NU News spoke to the award-wining student, about their time at Nipissing and how they achieved their academic success. This week’s feature focuses on the President’s Gold Medal winning graduate Nathan Mountain.
Mountain is from Englehart, ON. He graduated from Nipissing’s Master of Environmental Sciences/Studies program.
Mountain attributes his academic success to his professor’s "open door" policy that provided additional direction and clarification, as well as the services available at the Office of Student Development and Services.
“I really don't think I would have finished my undergrad if it wasn't for one of my professors identifying that the Office of Student Development & Services may be of assistance to me,” says Mountain. “By utilizing the Office of Student Development and Services, I brought my marks up from a near failing grade and finished my undergrad with distinction and moved on to complete my Masters.”
During his time at the Nipissing, Mountain also earned undergrad for a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology. Currently he is employed with Story Environmental Inc. as the Environmental Site Manager.
“I can honestly say I didn't set out to win any awards. I loved what I was doing and was genuinely interested in it,” says Mountain. “ I worked long hours, had a supportive partner and family, and most of all had a fantastic advisor and second author who encouraged critical thinking and provided gentle nudges when all seemed lost.”
