Math Circles get international exposure

At the recent Joint Meetings of American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America held in San Antonio, Texas, January 10 - 13, 2015, Dr. Tzvetalin Vassilev presented a contributed talk titled Math Circles in North Bay - the Northern Experience describing the challenges and successes of the program in the previous three years, 2011-2014. This talk was part of the thematic program of the Special Interest Group on Mathematical Circles of MAA.Dr. Vassilev's presentation generated a lot of interest and discussion, and Math Circles will be featured on the website of the (US) National Association of Mathematical Circles.

Coincidentally, two journal articles describing the experiences of the faculty and students organizing the Math Circles in North Bay, and the activities they designed for the program, appeared recently in the British Journal of Education, Society and Behavioural Science: Math Circles in North Bay – the Northern Experience Activities for Math Circles

Math Circles continues to grow in popularity. Currently, there are 46 students registered in the program, a number that exceeds the attendance in the last three years combined. The program exposes school-age children to mathematical topics that are non-standard in a fun and exciting way. It also prepares students to participate in the annual Math Kangaroo contest held at the end of March. Participating students consistently earn medals at the national level in this contest. The motto of the contest is: "Math can be fun and joy!
