Celebrating teaching excellence

Teaching excellence is a vital component to what makes Nipissing University an exceptional place for students. The university is pleased to celebrate two fantastic teachers,Dr. Glenda Black andJoseph Boivin, with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Nipissing University Teaching Award for CASBU Members, respectively.Both Black and Boivin were nominated by students for the award, and chosen by a selection committee. The award will be celebrated at the upcoming convocation ceremonies and each will have their name engraved on a commemorative plaque. Each recipient receives a $1,500 professional development/research grant.
Black, an assistant professor in the Schulich School of Education, joined Nipissing University in 2009, after a career teaching grades 2 to 8 and working as a Vice-Principal. Students noted many occasions where she has gone above and beyond in providing support outside the classroom, preparing students for practicums, assisting with employment applications and resume writing, and organizing workshops for lesson planning. Black is described by her students as a natural leader who is enthusiastic, collaborative, nurturing and practical. She will receive a framed award certificate at the convocation ceremony on June 11, at 9:30 a.m.
Boivin is an instructor in the department of Biology and Chemistry who joined Nipissing University in 2008. Students commented on his enthusiasm and preparation for classes. They appreciate his open door policy and accessibility after class hours. An active communicator, Boivin promptly responds to emails and provides good and substantial feedback on assignments. He will receive a framed award certificate at the convocation ceremony on June 12, at 2 p.m.
