Burk’s work selected for exhibition and publication

Congratulations to Amanda Burk, associate professor of Fine Arts, who recently had her work, Hushed Renewal, accepted into the 35th Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition in Illinois. Burk’s work has also been chosen for publication inPocketful Illustration Magazine.

The Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition is the second-longest running juried print and drawing competition in the United States. Every two years, it features the best contemporary graphic artwork from around the globe. This year's exhibition features 142 works of art by 108 international artists. The 35th Bradley International Exhibition runs March 7 to April 17, 2015, and is hosted in multiple venues connected to Bradley University in Peoria, IL.

Hushed Renewal also appears inPocketful Illustration Magazine, Issue 11, Behind the rain... Beyond the moon..., published February 2015. Pocketful Illustration Magazine is an online and printed magazine, curated and edited by Selin Yurdakul. Pocketful is international in its scope and has been issued twice a year since July 2008.

Hushed Renewal belongs to Burk's ongoing Quiescence series. This series of large-scale figurative graphite drawings contemplates ideas around dormancy and the ways in which we experience winter in the body.

“What I mean by the ways we experience 'winter in the body' is more specifically the moments, months or years triggered by what our bodies are enduring that cause our physical body or mental, emotional selves to go quiet for a period of time,” explains Burk.  “I am interested in these periods of stillness and the potential for these experiences to be healing and regenerative. On a personal level these drawings are an empathetic response to witnessing individuals close to me experience illness."
