Soccer teams grab important points in weekend action
?Your Lakers men’s and women’s soccer teams were in action this past weekend, taking on the RMC Paladins on Saturday and the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday.
Men’s action
The Lakers men’s team came up with a huge lopsided win over RMC on Saturday, racking up an 8-0 victory, their first of the season.
Neil Van de Walle and Andy Bago both scored twice to lead the Lakers attack.
Van de Walle’s first came just 11 minutes into the game. Jean Michel Paulin made it 2-0 just three minutes later and Ryan Mantle scored to make it 3-0 and put the game out of hand.
Despite being in complete control of the game in the second half, the Lakers stuck with their plan and cruised to the win.
Grainger Munro picked up the win in goal for the Lakers.
With the game in hand, Lakers head coach Carlo DeVuono and his coaching staff were able to get everyone in the game and spread out the playing time, saving some energy for the next day’s big clash with the Gaels.
On Sunday, the Lakers weren’t quite so dominant, as they were defeated by Queen’s 2-0, finishing the weekend with a split. The Lakers now sit at 1-2-1 after four straight road games.
The Lakers now gear up for their home opener, which goes Wednesday against their northern rivals, the Laurentian Voyageurs.
Following Wednesday’s game, the Lakers will host Carleton on Saturday and will then remain at home for two more games the next weekend.
After a decent road trip earning four points and coming home with some positives, the Lakers will look to really get going on home field.
Women’s action
The Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team earned another point on the road, with a 2-2 draw against RMC on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers received goals from Shannon Russell and Val Confesor and twice erased a one-goal deficit to earn the point.
