O’Donnell named OUA men’s hockey second team all-star

Thanks to a strong season where he led the Nipissing Lakers in assists and points, forward and assistant captain Conor O’Donnell has been named a second team OUA All-Star. O’Donnell had an impressive year in leading the Lakers back to the playoffs, finishing tied for third in league scoring, just six points behind the leader.

He had 13 goals and 31 assists in 28 games and added 88 penalty minutes.

O’Donnell also had three power play goals and one shorthanded goal, but was unable to register a point in the Lakers two playoff games.

The power forward actually got off to a slow start, only recording one assist through the first four games, but he then went on a tear, recording at least a point in 16 straight games, including seven multi-point efforts.

Overall, O’Donnell had 12 games where he recorded at least two points, he had four games where he piled up three points and three games where he scooped up four points.

The Hamilton, ON native also had three multi-goal games and had a five game goal scoring streak from Nov. 16 to Dec. 1.

Often playing on the top line with the Lakers leading goal scorer Grant Toulmin, the two combined for a potent one-two attack, with O’Donnell often setting up Toulmin, who led the Lakers with 16 goals.

O’Donnell ranked second in assists in the OUA and finished tied for fifth in CIS scoring and was fourth in the nation in helpers.

The 24-year-old just completed his fourth year at Nipissing following a four year OHL career that saw him win an OHL championship and Memorial Cup with the Windsor Spitfires in 2009.

During his four year career with the Lakers, O’Donnell piled up 35 goals, 99 assists for 134 points in 108 games.

This is O’Donnell’s second straight season being named to the OUA all-star team. The first came last season when he was named to the second team all-star squad.
