Lots on the go at Muskoka campus

Nipissing’s beautiful Muskoka campus is a happening spot these days with plans for a community garden, a regular radio show and area students presenting on their exploits.
The campus will be growing, literally, this year, thanks to a District of Muskoka Pay it Forward grant, which will be used to build a Growing Together Garden on campus. It will be a teaching and sustainable food garden designed to create community, supply food and teach transferable skills to those individuals who are often vulnerable and marginalized within the community. The project is the result of a partnership with Nipissing’s Dr. Anne Wagner and Lynn DeCaro, and the Muskoka Parry Sound Community Mental Health Services.

The Campus Beat radio show continues to reach out to the community to learn about all things education.  The program has had the opportunity to speak with Beth Ward, Executive Director of Muskoka YWCA about funding cuts to the Boys Quest program. Listeners also heard from Shania Tabobondung, a student at Parry Sound High School who shared her award winning short film and her struggles with depression, self harm and her journey to health.  

Recently, the campus heard from students and teachers from Gravenhurst High School and Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes Secondary School about the value of alternative ways of learning.  Over the next couple of weeks students at St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School will share how they are involved in their school and community education projects.
