Lakers athletes earn Academic All-Canadian awards
Nipissing University recently celebrated 15 student-athletes who received CIS Academic All-Canadian awards for the 2012-13 season.
A CIS Academic All-Canadian distinction is one of the highest recognitions a university student athlete can receive.
The 15 winners came from four different sports; five – Brogan Bailey, Dane Horvat, Grant Toulmin, Sam Hopewell and Jordan Gallea – came from the Men’s Hockey team, two – Sean Winter and Nathan Sluiskes – from Men’s Soccer, three – Erin Pomanti, Valaine Confesor and Braelyn MacMaster – from Women’s Soccer and five – Amy Claridge, Emily Floyd, Melissa McKiel, Felicia Saunders and Jordan Scott – from the Cross Country team.
In 1988, the CIS introduced its first Academic All-Canadians, those exceptional student-athletes who achieve an academic standing of 80 per cent or better, all while playing on one of their university’s varsity teams.
Students at Nipissing University strive for excellence in sport, academics and in the great community.
Athletes at Nipissing University spend over 20 hours per week on school work, while committing at least another 20 hours to athletics, as they practice daily and compete most weekends.
On top of this, many student-athletes find the time to volunteer with various community organizations.
The athletes who earn this prestigious honour are inspirational to the great Nipissing community and Lakers Athletics would like to congratulate them for their work ethic and determination.
This was the first – of hopefully many – annual All-Canadian luncheons the Lakers will have to celebrate and honour their successful student-athletes.
