Dr. Carré talking about link between faces and behaviour
Nipissing’s department of psychology is pleased to present the latest instalment of their speaker series, featuring Dr. Justin Carré, assistant professor of psychology, for a special lecture, In your Face: Examining the Relationship Between Facial Structure and Behaviour, Friday, October 24 at 2 p.m. in room A252.
Here’s an abstract:
People are often told not to “judge a book by its cover”. Yet, a large body of work indicates that people reliably, and in some cases, accurately make judgments of another person’s personality traits and/or behavioural dispositions from static facial photographs. The accuracy of such first impressions suggests that observers might base their judgments on static facial features, which themselves are predictive of the personality/behavioural traits of interest. One feature – the facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR) – has received a great deal of attention in the literature and has been linked to a wide range of traits including aggression, risk-taking, unethical behaviour, sex drive, and non-reciprocation of trust. In this talk, I will provide a review of this literature and highlight recent work in my laboratory demonstrating that the strength of the association between the fWHR and outcome measures depends critically on whether people (or monkeys) are relatively low or high in social status.
All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
