CIC talk on education of females in Nepal - TOMORROW

The Nipissing Branch of the Canadian International Council (CIC) is pleased to welcome Michelle Bonneau to campus this Thursday, November 13, for a special lecture examining issues related to the education of women and girls in Nepal.
Titled Women of Hope, Women of Action in Nepal, Bonneau will draw on her first-hand experiences from her time working for the education of females in Nepal. The talk takes place from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in room A226.

Bonneau is a retired teacher and counselor, and founder of the Inter-cultural Women's Education Network (IWEN).  After 25 years of working as a teacher, she finished her Masters in Counseling and moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, where she worked as a counselor in the areas of addiction, domestic violence and trauma.

At 58 years old she states she had an epiphany and decided to leave everything behind, pack a suitcase and go to Nepal to work for the education of females.  She witnessed the state of education for girls and women throughout Asia in her 2001 travels.

The IWEN was started in Kelowna BC in 2005 with the help of two Filipino women. Bonneau departed in September of 2005 to travel to Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, at the height of the People's War. By 2006, IWEN was established in rural Nepal.  For the past nine years she has served as the director of IWEN.  When not working on projects in Nepal, she travels throughout Canada raising awareness of development issues affecting women and girls.

And that’s not all the CIC is up to. On November 25, they will welcome Karen McBride, President and CEO of the Canadian Bureau for International Education to discuss The Value of International Education from Today to Tomorrow and Beyond.

The Canadian International Council is a non-partisan, non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the engagement of Canadians in Canadian foreign policy and in international issues generally.
