Celebrate at the Powwow
Celebrate Aboriginal culture at the ninth annual Welcome Powwow at Nipissing University and Canadore College, Friday, September 12, with the Grand Entry taking place at 11 a.m. beside the Education Centre Pond.
The one-day powwow is an opportunity for students, faculty and community to celebrate and share Aboriginal Culture, while honouring the diversity of all Nations represented at Canadore College and Nipissing University. Featuring traditional drummers, singers and dancers in regalia, the fun and interactive event also includes welcome messages from Nipissing First Nation, the Métis Nation, Canadore College, Nipissing University and the City of North Bay.
There are more than 650 First Nation, Inuit and Métis students enrolled in courses at the two institutions. Many travel long distances to attend school in North Bay, from as far west as Alberta to James Bay and Northern Quebec.
The powwow is hosted by Nipissing University’s Office of Aboriginal Initiatives and Canadore College’s First Peoples’ Centre.
Everyone is welcome and admission is free.
All dancers in regalia are asked to register in advance with Gerard Peltier at the Canadore College First Peoples’ Centre at 705-474-7600, ext. 5963.
Please Note: Pictures and filming are not permitted during the Grand Entry and Flag Song.
