Women’s soccer earns a split, men drop two

The Nipissing Lakers men’s and women’s soccer teams were in action at home this past weekend. The women earned a split, losing to UofT before beating Ryerson, while the men lost both games by a single goal.Women’s actionHeartbreak is the only way to describe the loss the Nipissing Lakers women’s soccer team suffered on Saturday afternoon against the University of Toronto.
With the game tied 0-0 as the two sides went back and forth, Toronto snatched the win, scoring in injury time of the second half, with just seconds left in the match.
Coming on as a substitute, Christine Zwimpfer scored the lone goal of the game, giving the Toronto the win, and sending the Lakers to defeat.
Thankfully, the Lakers had no time to dwell on the tough loss as they were back on the pitch hosting Ryerson on Sunday.
The team displayed some true grit in earning the victory over Ryerson.
Mallory Archer scored in the 61st minute and just five minutes later, Valaine Confesor scored what would be the game-winner to give the Lakers a 2-1 win over the Ryerson Rams.
The Rams scored a goal in injury time to break Carlee Bennard’s shutout bid, but the Lakers held on for the win.
The Lakers peppered the Rams net, especially in the second half and were rewarded with two goals and a big win.
The Lakers will look to build on this success and an overall strong weekend heading into Friday’s clash with Laurentian on the road, and Sunday’s tilt with Trent at home as they look to finish the year on a strong note.Men’s action
Despite having a number of chances in the first half, the Nipissing Lakers men’s soccer team came up just short against the University of Toronto.
The Lakers outshot the Blues in the first 45 minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net and U of T hung around just enough to score in the 73rd minute to earn the victory.
The Lakers were back in action on Sunday hosting Ryerson, and looking to avenge the loss to Toronto. Alas, it seems like the Lakers men’s soccer team just can’t catch a break these days.
For the second day in a row, the Lakers dropped a one goal decision, this time, falling to the Ryerson Rams by a score of 3-2.
Nipissing grabbed an early lead thanks to Ryan Mantle’s goal in the 19th minute.
The Rams evened things up to send the teams to the half-time break tied at one.
The Rams then exploded for two goals in just three minutes to grab a commanding 3-1 lead, that would last until the final whistle.
Drew Johnson would get one back for the Lakers, as he scored in the 83rd minute, but that was as close as they would come, as they failed to pick up a point this weekend.
The Lakers next action comes next weekend as they head to Sudbury for a battle with Laurentian Friday night, before returning home for a match with Trent on Sunday afternoon.
