Opportunity for students to build school in Guatemala
Nipissing students now have the chance experience international travel while making a real difference as global citizens thanks to a new opportunity to build a school in Antigua, Guatemala, over the February Reading Week.Nipissing is partnering with GiveGetGo, a volunteer travel company based out of Mississauga, that builds orphanages, schools, and medical centres in developing communities throughout the world.
GiveGetGo representatives will be on the Muskoka and North Bay campuses on Wednesday October 9, at 3 p.m. in Classroom 2 (Muskoka), and 7 p.m. in room A137 (North Bay) to share information with any interested students.
The plan is for students to assist in building six new classrooms to allow Melody School in Antigua to expand in order to educate more children. Nipissing students will also be able to immerse themselves in the Spanish culture of Antigua, venture through the surrounding mountains and volcanoes, discover the thriving Mayan culture and venture to ancient ruins.
Charitable tax receipts are available for up to 50 per cent of the costs of the trip. Volunteers are also able to fundraise to cover costs associated with the available trip.
