Lakers volleyball collect wins

As the OCAA Volleyball season winds down, both Lakers teams are hitting their stride, collecting important wins in weekend games against the Conestoga Condors.Men’s actionThe Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team got back to the win column with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-15) victory over the visiting Conestoga Condors (0-17).
The win improves the Lakers record to 11-6 on the season, putting the team in fourth place in the OCAA West Division standings; however, important matches remain that will determine the Lakers playoff seeding.
Against the Condors on Saturday, Frankie Edgecombe and Adam Leblanc led the offence with 11 points each while Scott Coulthard collected eight points.
The Lakers honoured five graduating players before the match as Taylor Bielby, Adam and Andre Leblanc, Edgecombe and Coulthard were presented with a commemorative plaque and thanked for their dedication and commitment to the volleyball program and Nipissing University.
The Lakers have one game remaining in the regular season.  They will face their cross campus rivals the Canadore Panthers on Tuesday (last night, game results unavailable at press time).
Should the Lakers win, they will most likely be playing the waiting game to find out if they will be hosting a playoff game or travel to play a sudden death match for a berth to the OCAA championship hosted by Sheridan College.Women’s Action
The Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team improved to 14-3 on the season with a dominating 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-13) performance over the visiting Conestoga Condors (5-12).
Prior to the match, the Lakers honoured four graduating players, presenting commemorative plaques to Jacquie Dyball, Rebecca Ramsay, Stephanie Tiegs and Tressa Vancoillie.
As far as the game was concerned, the Lakers started off slowly but were able to distance themselves from the Condors with solid serving and efficient free ball conversions. The Lakers controlled the match the entire way and rookie middle player Briar Fleming did a nice job of replacing Brittany MacComish, who was taken out for precautionary reasons after being hit by a teammate’s errant serve.
Brittany Ardron and Dyball led the Lakers offence with eight points apiece while Lauren Breadner and Fleming each added five points.
The Lakers will look to finish the season on a winning note Tuesday as they face their cross campus rivals the Canadore Panthers (0-16) in the final installment of the Battle of the Bay.
