A group of 28 fourth-year concurrent education students at Nipissing Brantford are combining the trip of a lifetime with their teaching placement this year as they embarked on a three-week trip to the Masai Mara region of Kenya on April 28.The students raised about $2,400 to purchase supplies needed for their lessons in Kenya.

They will be joined by two faculty facilitators: Lynne Vokes-Leduc and Rick Denton.

While in Kenya, the students will teach Grade 3 to Grade 7 at Enelerai Elementary School, employing curriculum developed in Kenya. They will also work with the Kenyan teachers, sharing insights into classroom management and student engagement.

As part of the trip, the students will help in a building project and will take part in cultural activities, including an African safari, a water walk with Mamas, Maasai weapons training, attendance at church, visiting the local subsistence market, and visits to a new local health clinic.

The trip is expected provide students a better understanding of life in a developing country while honing their teaching skills by using limited resources and English as a Second Language strategies.
