Nipissing residence students giving back
While attending to their academic pursuits, the students living in Nipissing’s North Bay and Muskoka residence complexes have made the time to raise awareness and funds for some very worthy causes.
The recent CIBC Run for the Cure in support of breast cancer research, was a crowning moment for the Residence Life Team and their communities. The two campuses raised a combined total of more than $5,000.
Part of their success can be chalked up to planning and hosting great events like a Think Pink night in association with the Wall, a Think Pink Car Wash, t-shirt sales, bake sales, lemonade stands, and Zumba for the Cure. The North Bay team, spearheaded by Kacey Chapman, was awarded the Post-Secondary Challenge plaque and banner for most funds raised by a school team.
Inspired by the success of the CIBC Run for the Cure campaign, a student-run volunteer committee from Founders House spent their first week raising funds for The Gathering Place in time for Thanksgiving weekend. Asking for spare change donations in the lobby of the residence complex, the Community Action Committee raised $103.71 for the cause.
“The efforts of Nipissing students outside of the classroom and in the community often go unseen,” said Sterling Webb-Crowe, Residence Programming Coordinator. “Our students are very engaged and passionate about community issues. It’s important that we recognize them and their efforts to increase awareness, to educate, and to provide what money they can for the causes they support.”
