Nipissing hosting Dr. Barreiro book launch

Nipissing University’s Office of Aboriginal Initiatives is proud to present the Canadian launch of Dr. José Barreiro’s new book, Taino, on Wednesday, October 24 at 3:30 p.m. in the Treaty Learning Centre of the Harris Learning Library.

Taino is “written” by Guaikán, an elderly Taino man who, in his youth, was adopted by Christopher Columbus and saw history unfold.  Taino is the Indian chronicle of the American encounter, the Native view on Columbus and what happened in the Caribbean. This novel, based on a true story, penetrates the historical veil that still enshrines the "discovery."

October is also Columbus month, commemorating Christopher Columbus’ sailing of the ocean blue and “discovering” the Americas.

Dr. José Barreiro is a senior fellow at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC. A leading scholar of American Indian policy and contemporary Native experience, his books and papers cover a wide range of topics. He helped establish the American Indian Program at Cornell University and is a member of the Taino Nation of the Antilles.

Dr. Barreiro will read from the book and will answer questions following the reading. Copies of Taino will be available for purchase.

The launch is free of charge and all are welcome.
