The Nipissing Lakers men’s and women’s volleyball teams were in action this past weekend, facing the Niagara Knights and Sheridan Bruins. The men’s team swept their opponents to add to their impressive 12-1 season record, while the women’s team lost to Niagara before beating Sheridan.Lakers sweep Knights and BruinsThe Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team improved to 12-1 on the season by sweeping a pair of weekend games against the Niagara Knights (3-10) and Sheridan Bruins (8-6).
The pair of wins keeps allows the Lakers to keep pace with the Humber Hawks, each sporting an identical 12-1 record.
The Lakers will look to continue to roll as they host their final home games this weekend with a pivotal game against the Mohawk Mountaineers scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers have an 11-3 record and are looking to challenge for second place and the automatic bid to the provincial championships hosted by Nipissing University.
Sunday will see the Lakers face the St. Clair Saints who hold a 1-13 record.Lady Lakers humbled by Knights
The Nipissing Lady Lakers (10-3) dropped a 3-2 (25-21, 13-25, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15) decision to the Niagara Knights (7-6) on Saturday before rebounding with a 3-0 sweep of the Sheridan Bruins (7-7) on Sunday to end a disappointing road trip.
“You have to give credit to Niagara for the effort they put forth,” said head coach Marc LaRochelle. “They played with a lot of heart.”
The Lady Lakers now have to be perfect the rest of the way if they hope to capture second place in the West Division and the automatic berth to the OCAA championship in Barrie. There is no room for error as the Fanshawe Falcons have only three losses and the head-to-head match-up will be an important one.
The Lady Lakers will play their final home games this weekend as they face the Mohawk Mountaineers and Saint Clair Saints. Games are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday beginning at noon.
