Lakers soccer squads come up short in Ottawa
Men’s ResultsThe Nipissing Lakers men’s soccer team (1-1-1) travelled to the nation’s capital to take on the undefeated Carleton Ravens (4-0) last weekend. The Lakers put in a valiant effort; however, the Ravens escaped with a narrow 2-1 victory.Second-year striker Andrew Latty quickly put the Ravens up 1-0 as he found the back of the net in the fifth minute.
The Lakers Graham Dufort responded as he converted a ball that was nicely headed by Brandon TeBrake to even the contest at 1-1 in the 30th minute.
Joey Kewin brought the Ravens back in the lead with a late goal in the first half.
The second half was scoreless, and the Kewin goal stood up as the game winner.
“I am proud of the effort our guys put in today,” said head coach Carlo DeVuono. “Our defence played well and as the game progressed we played a more physical game which is what we will need to do from the start this weekend.”
The Lakers will be at home this weekend to take on the Ryerson Rams and Toronto Blues this weekend at the Education Centre Field. Games are Saturday and Sunday at 2:15 p.m.Women’s Results
The Nipissing Lady Lakers soccer squad was shutout in a pair of weekend games in Ottawa.
Saturday, in a rain-filled affair, the first place Ottawa Gee Gees (4-0-1) scored three goals in a span of seven minutes to hand the Lakers (0-3-1) the loss. The Gee Gees defence has not allowed a goal thus far in the season while posting 17 goals for.
On Sunday, the Lady Lakers would face another tough opponent as the Carleton Ravens (2-1-1) we looking to make a move in the standings.
Nicole Filipow opened the scoring at the 15th minute for the Ravens and they would add another goal late in the first half by Adrianna Ruggiero, putting the Ravens up 2-0 heading into the second half.
Tina Lacava brought the score up to 3-0 in the 36th minute and the Ravens would tally two more before the end of the match.
The Lady Lakers will re-group as they host Ryerson and Toronto this weekend at the Education Centre Field.
