Feed author skyping to Nipissing students
Nipissing University welcomes M.T. Anderson, author of the bookFeed, to campus via skype on November 14 at 7 p.m. in the Weaver Auditorium (B200).
Anderson’s novel, Feed, is the featured book for Nipissing’s Common Book Common Ground program this year.
The session, moderated by assistant professor and Chair of the English department, Dr. Cameron McFarlane, will include a lecture from Anderson and a question and answer session.
Feed tells the story of a futuristic Earth in which internet connectivity is fed directly into peoples' brains, while a group of teenagers cope with connection to and disconnection from their society. Satirizing the increasing prevalence of electronic communication over physical interactions, as well as the increasing commercialization of the internet and of society, Feed paints a graphic picture of a world where knowledge has become so accessible that no one bothers to actually learn anything for themselves.
All first-year students in the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Applied and Professional Schools received a complimentary copy of the book at the start of the school year. Many of the students will be discussing the book in one or more of their courses this year.
The project has two main goals: to introduce students in an academic way to literacy and critical thinking, and to provide students with some common intellectual ground to facilitate discussion and friendship.
Admission is free; however, a non-perishable food item in support of the local Food Bank is appreciated.
