Wild weekend for Lakers hockey, team reenters Top 10

The Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team had what can only be considered a wild weekend, defeating the Concordia Stingers in a record setting 11-6 barnburner on Friday night, before falling to the Carleton Ravens 7-5 on Saturday in Ottawa.On Tuesday, the team reentered the CIS Top 10, ranked #10 in the Nation.

Friday night’s game at Memorial Gardens started out looking like a cakewalk, with the Lakers jumping out to a 7 – 1 lead going into the third period. Concordia, however, refused to lie down, scoring five third period goals in a losing effort.

Laker forward Connor O’Donnell set a team record with seven assists and a goal for eight points on the night. Other Laker goals came from the sticks of Dorian Peca, with three; Doug Clarkson, with a pair (plus four helpers); Lucas McKinley; Danny Watt; Brodie Beard; Matt Paton and Scott Restoule.

On Saturday in Ottawa against the Carleton Ravens, the Lakers took a 4-2 lead in the third period, before stumbling enough to surrender five goals in 13 minutes en route to a 7-5 loss, their second loss of the season.  

Lighting the goal lamp for the Lakers was Peca, with two; Kevin Rebelo, with two; and Brodie Beard.

O’Donnell continued his Gretzky impression, picking up another two assists to lead the OUA in scoring with 21 points in 13 games.

The Lakers record now sits at 8-2-3, one point back of McGill for first place overall.
