Both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams brought home silver in tournament action this past weekend.Lakers capture silver at RMC tournamentThe Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team captured silver at the RMC invitational volleyball tournament on the weekend dropping a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) decision to York in the finals. Both teams finished with identical 4-1 records.
“It was a disappointing finish to the end of the tournament losing three straight sets to York University. The players ran out of steam and fight in the last match.” said head coach Eric Yung.
“York out matched us in every aspect of the game; however, it was a successful weekend for our program getting its first taste of CIS competition. Our student-athletes have worked extremely hard for the past month and it paid off this weekend. It was a new experience facing bigger and more technical teams, but we were up for the challenge.
I really did not know what to expect coming in, but I am very proud of the guys for adjusting quickly. The coaching staff is extremely happy with our results, at the same time looking forward to getting better each week.”

On Friday, the Lakers beat Atlantic Canada’s Memorial University 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25) to open the tournament and followed that up Saturday by sweeping Ryerson and RMC 3-0 who both currently play in the OUA.

The Lakers will be travelling to the Nation’s capital this weekend to play some exhibition matches against Algonquin College and Cegep de L’Outaouais.Lady Lakers capture silver in Oakville
The Nipissing Lady Lakers volleyball team walked away with silver after dropping a close 16-14 decision in the third and deciding set to arch rival Humber College in the championship match of the Fred Wannamaker Invitational Tournament hosted by Sheridan College.

The Lady Lakers arrived in the finals by sweeping Durham, Sheridan, Seneca and Cambrian. In the semi-finals, the Lady Lakers swept Seneca 2-0 to make it to the championship game.

Setter Kristi Town and forth-year middle player Lucia DeMarco were named tournament all-stars.

“I am happy with our progress since our last tournament at Brock University,” stated head coach Marc LaRochelle. We were able to roll through many different line-ups and try different combinations and the girls responded very well.”

“In the finals, I thought it was a good match. We basically faced a veteran Humber line-up while we only had two returning players on the floor and we did a good job of competing. We will only get better as we gain more experience.

“I think our depth is our greatest asset this season. We have many players that will challenge for court time and we will push each other to become better and more consistent.”

The Lady Lakers will be back in action at the Humber Cup October 28 and 29 participating in their final tune-up matches before the season kicks off on November 5 and 6 as Conestoga and Sheridan visit Nipissing’s new and improved athletic centre.
