Lakers hockey goes one and one, soccer teams drop game

The Nipissing Lakers hockey team kept to their winning ways on Friday night versus the Laurier Golden Hawks with a 5-4 win, but were outgunned by the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, losing 7-2. The soccer teams, meanwhile, each dropped 1-0 games against the Trent Excalibur. On Friday, in the Battle for Brantford, Nipissing battled back from a 3-0 deficit to take down last season’s second place team in the powerful OUA West division. Jeff Leaist notched the game winning goal on a blast from the blue line with only 2:03 remaining. Nipissing and Laurier both have campuses in Brantford, Ontario, and share many students in concurrent education partnership. With Lauier up 3-0 in the second period when Lakers coach Mike McParland called a timeout to refocus his team. It worked like a charm. The Lakers stormed back, scoring four goals in 10 minutes. Laurier tied the game up before the third period was a minute old; setting the stage for Leasit’s game winning heroics. Leaist scored two goals, with Kevin Rebelo, Scott Restoule and Andrew Marcoux also introducing pucks to the back of the Laurier net. The Lakers outshot Laurier 36-23, with Lakers goalie Daniel Spence notching his second win. On Saturday, the Waterloo Warriors scored three power play goals en route to a 7–2 victory over the Lakers.   Scoring for the Lakers was provided by Dan Watt, with a power play goal, and Marcus Watson. Lakers captain Brodie Beard had two assists. The Lakers return to Memorial Gardens for a pair of home games this coming weekend, hosting the Western Mustangs Friday at 7 p.m. and the Guelph Gryphons Saturday at 7 p.m. The Lakers soccer teams, meanwhile, were in Peterborough, taking on the Trent Excalibur in some very hard fought action. The Lakers men and women, unfortunately, each came out on the wrong end of separate 1-0 games.
