Lakers hockey earn points despite OT losses
The Nipissing Lakers hockey team managed to earn two valuable points despite an overtime loss to the University of Toronto on Friday night, and a shootout loss to Ryerson on Saturday.
On Friday night at Memorial Gardens, the Lakers met the Blues in front of 1,553 fans for what turned out to be a game marked by power plays and penalty kills before the Blues ended the affair one minute into overtime. A total of 26 power plays were awarded throughout the game.
The Lakers scored twice on 16 power plays, while UofT went 1-for10 with the extra skaters.
Dorian Peca, Jordan Gallea and Marcus Watson popped goals for the Lakers in the 4-3 loss.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, defenceman Jason Gray was tossed from the game after leveling Cassidy Preston with a crushing hit in the second period. While no penalty was immediately called on the play, the referees conferred after the fact and handed down a five-minute head-checking penalty and a game misconduct on Gray.
A scant 19 hours later, the Lakers were back on the ice in Toronto to face the Ryerson Rams.
Dan Watt, Dorian Peca and Doug Clarkson scored for the Lakers, with Clarkson providing the tying goal with 48 seconds left on the clock and goaltender Dan Spence on the bench.
After overtime proved scoreless, Ryerson scored the only goal of the shootout to earn the 4-3 victory.
The Lakers played the game without Gray, who was serving a game misconduct for his devastating hit against UofT.
The losses give the Lakers a 4-1-2 record, good for 10 points and a three-way tie at the top of the OUA East division.
