About
Jen’s direct practice experience includes adventure therapy with youth and women, clinical work with trauma survivors, perinatal mood and anxiety, adult mental health group therapies and, most recently, supportive services for individuals, couples and groups affected by rare and young onset dementia. Jen’s approach to social work is guided by the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice with and focus on equity, diversity and inclusion in relation to health services in Northern Ontario. Jen holds particular interest in post-traumatic growth, perinatal mental health, eating disorders, mindfulness, neurodiversity and neurodegenerative disease. Jen is presently working for Rare Dementia Support Canada, a service led by Nipissing University and Dr. Mary Pat Sullivan. Rare Dementia Support Canada is a national, virtual, service. Supports are provided in partnership with Rare Dementia Support UK, a world leading service provided by University College London Dementia Research Centre. Jen's work prior to this placement with Rare Dementia Support Canada was as a social worker for the North Bay Regional Health Centre. There, Jen worked on the Therapy Services Team. This multidisciplinary team runs a Graduated Group Therapy Program. As a member of the team Jen facilitated groups in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, treatment for Perinatal Mood and Anxiety and Eating Disorders. In addition to her experience with these modalities listed, Jen practices the principles and tools of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in her work with clients.

Research

Additionally, Jen works as a research assistant to the Rare Dementia Support Impact Study, this research informs the work of Rare Dementia Support Canada. Previously, Jen’s research for her Master of Social Work thesis built on her experience in her undergraduate studies where she focused on Maternal Health and Public Health. Jen’s MSW research focused on mother’s experiences combining the unpaid physical labour of breastfeeding with paid employment outside the home. In 2014 and 2015 Jen worked as the Community Development Coordinator for the Northern Ontario Postpartum Mood Disorders Project. Working for the Community Counselling Centre of Nipissing and in partnership with the Thunder Bay Counselling Centre and B’saanibamaadsiwin Aboriginal Mental Health Program this Trillium Funded Project worked with communities across Northern Ontario to develop a Strategy on to build awareness and present recommendations on Perinatal Mental Health.
