Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. A few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your accounts, devices, and information safe. Whether you are studying, teaching, working, or browsing online, here are some quick reminders to help you spot common risks and stay protected.
Quick Ways to Stay Cyber Safe
Use a strong, unique password or passphrase that you do not use anywhere else.
Never share your password, passphrase, or multi-factor authentication code.
Only approve an MFA request when you are the one trying to sign in.
Pause before opening links or attachments, especially if the message feels unexpected.
Keep your phone, laptop, browser, and apps up to date.
Use approved university services when storing or sharing university information.
If something seems unusual, report it to UTS so we can help check it out.
Think Before You Click
Phishing messages can look convincing and may appear to come from someone you know. Take a closer look before you click, reply, or download anything.
Does the message create a sudden sense of urgency?
Is it asking for your password, MFA code, payment details, or personal information?
Were you expecting the attachment, login link, or file share?
Does the sender’s email address look slightly off or unfamiliar?
Is someone asking you to change payment, banking, account, or personal information?
If you are unsure, do not click or respond. If known, contact the sender directly using a trusted method, such as a known phone number or email address, or report the message to UTS for review.
When to Contact UTS
You clicked a suspicious link or opened an unexpected attachment.
You entered your password on a suspicious website.
You receive an MFA request that you did not start.
Your university device is lost or stolen.
You think university information may have been shared or exposed by mistake.
