Upcoming Office of Aboriginal Initiatives events
Nipissing’s Office of Aboriginal Initiatives has some exciting upcoming events planned.
Indigenous Week; October 5 – 9
This week, students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in a series of experiential and cultural learning opportunities. Activities include Elder teachings and guest speaker presentations by Maurice Switzer, Dale Turner, Dawn Lamothe and Paige Restoule as well as drum making, beading and traditional singing workshops.
For more information please contact Lorie Hall in the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives or visit the website here.
Voluntary Aboriginal Student Self – Identification Process
At Nipissing University, students who identify with First Nations (Status/Non-Status), Métis, Inuit cultural and/or ancestral background can choose to self-identify through a voluntary and confidential online process through WebAdvisor. By doing so, students connect to the on-campus Aboriginal student community and have increased access to information about specialized programs and services. Additionally, self-identification helps the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives and Nipissing University to gain a greater understanding of Aboriginal students on-campus in order to enhance existing and future programs and services.

Traditional Land-Based Teachings
Enhance your awareness of Aboriginal history and worldview through a series of traditional land – based teachings. From September to March, the Office of Aboriginal Initiatives will be welcoming Elders and traditional teachers from communities across Ontario. Students, staff and faculty are welcome to engage in teachings including birch bark canoe building, Métis culture, traditional trapping and skinning.
