Staff helping students battle procrastination
The Harris Learning Library was full of get-it-done-energy last Thursday night as university and library staff partnered for the Long Night Against Procrastination.
Nipissing and Canadore were one of 16 institutions across Canada to host this event, making it the first coordinated effort for LNAP on campus. It was run by staff from the Nipissing’s Student Learning and Transitions department together with Harris Learning Library staff for the Long Night Against Procrastination (LNAP).
A total of 83 participants from both institutions participated in the event, which ran from 7 – 11 p.m. Students were encouraged to dedicate this time to school work and were provided with support to keep focused. A refreshment station was stocked with snacks designed to maintain high levels of energy and brainpower (coconut water is a great study beverage!). The staff provided engaging study breaks designed to track what students were working on during the evening. At 9 p.m., students were treated to an invigorating Zumba study break, led by one of Nipissing’s students. Workshops on study skills and strategies to avoid procrastination were offered – helping to provide students with tools to promote academic success.
Data collected points to the event as a success: 75% of students surveyed indicated that they were able to connect with peers and support services by participating in the event, and 89% of students reported that this event helped them feel more academically prepared. Students enjoyed the fun atmosphere, interactive activities, and opportunities to build connections with each other as well as withsupport services.
