Psych Speaker Series welcomes Dr. Bruner
Dr. Mark Bruner will provide the final installment for Nipissing’s Psychology Department Speaker Series this Friday, March 28, at 2 p.m. in room A257.Bruner, assistant professor in the Schulich School of Education’s Bachelor of Physical Health and Education program, specializes in group dynamics in youth sport and physical activity.
Here’s an abstract on his talk:
Only seven per cent of Canadian youth engage in the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity to meet the international guidelines for healthy growth and development (Colley et al., 2011). This low statistic has led researchers to move beyond traditional, individual-focused approaches to examine the efficacy of group-based interventions. Social groups are pervasive and have powerful effects on human behaviour (McGrath, 1984). An emerging body of research by Dr. Mark Bruner has focused on understanding how social groups (e.g., peers, sport teams, exercise groups) can influence, shape, and enhance youth physical activity and personal development. A recent focus of Dr. Bruner’s work has been to investigate how the identities youth form through membership on sport teams (i.e., their social identities) influence moral behaviour toward peers. Dr. Bruner will discuss the findings of his research and provide an overview of his ongoing SSHRC and CIHR-funded research projects.
Admission is free and all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
