A NU beginning in residence
This week Nipissing welcomes back more than 50 students, working as staff and/or volunteers from each of our five residence complexes (Muskoka included), to begin preparation for the impending arrival of our students. This year, the theme of our welcome events and our year’s activities is NU Beginnings, in recognition of the new experiences of attending university, the new year and the new communities that will be built.
On Monday, the student staff, including Residence Dons, Community Advisors and Community Coordinator, began a ten-day training period to prepare for the variety of ways they will support students living in residence. These student staffers have the responsibility of supporting the Residence Life Management Team in supervision of the residence complexes and facilitation of the residence communities. Their training covers a number of topics including understanding on-campus services, addressing alcohol consumption, team work, communication skills and attending to student development through needs-based initiatives.
This Saturday, 20 representative of our Residents’ Councils will arrive on campus to begin their training and preparations for Residence Orientation Weekend, September 1– 3 (September 8 – 9 in Muskoka)! This leadership group is governed and empowered by their own constitution which gives them a structure to support students and provide feedback to the Residence management about ways in which to better facilitate the student experience.
With Nipissing’s residences consistently rated at the top of the chart in the Globe and Mail University Report, the commitment and value of our student staffers in residence cannot be overlooked. While they have a lot of history to live up to, Nipissing is entirely confident that the team will exceed all expectations and ensure a fantastic experience for all Nipissing students living in residence.? ?
