Paul Nelson Memorial hockey games honour student
Nipissing University is proud to host the second annual Paul Nelson Memorial Hockey Games, December 5, from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Gardens. This year the event has been expanded to include two games. The first game, at 1:30 p.m. features third- year Bachelor of Physical Health Education Students (BPHE) students facing off against BPHE Alumni. The second game, at 2:30 p.m., features fourth-year BPHE students facing off against Nipissing University faculty and staff.
Paul Nelson was a hard working and well respected student in Nipissing’s BPHE program, who volunteered with his local fire department. He died in 2012 in a tragic accident while responding to a fire call.
To honour his memory, Nelson’s friends and Nipissing BPHE faculty created a scholarship in his name and are raising funds through these hockey games.
Admission to attend the game is a donation to the food bank, or a monetary donation. Students, staff and faculty wishing to play in the game, will pay a small fee to raise money. All game proceeds will go the scholarship fund in Paul Nelson’s name and Kid Sport North Bay.
“Paul did everything in his power to accommodate the people that were special to him, often putting the needs of others before his own. His passion for Nipissing and for the BPHE was unparalleled and his enthusiasm was evident in every class he attended,” said Matthew Mcrae, one of Nelson’s best friends and a BPHE graduate. “We really miss Paul and wanted to do something lasting to honour his memory. A scholarship and hockey game seemed like the perfect fit, combining his desire to help others with his love of sports.”
