Alberta/NWT/Nunavut – Program Specific Admission Requirements

General Admission Requirements

Secondary School Diploma with five academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31 including program specific prerequisites.

Average Calculations

  • Admission averages are calculated using the best five academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31 including prerequisites.
  • Scholarship averages are calculated using final grades in the best five academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31 (prerequisites not required).
  • If you write a provincial exam for any course, Nipissing will use the higher grade of either your in-school grade or your final grade for both admission and scholarship average calculations.
  • If you repeated a course, we use the higher grade when calculating the admission and scholarship averages.
  • We accept all courses completed at Ministry inspected and approved schools.
  • Non-academic courses (e.g., Physical Education, co-op – out of school component) are not used in the calculation of admission or scholarship averages.
  • All admission offers are conditional upon successfully completing five academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31, by the end of June 30. Offers are also conditional upon maintaining a minimum average (stated in an offer of admission) on final grades presented as of June 30.

Program Specific Admission Requirements

Bachelor of Arts

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Majors: Anthropology, Child and Family Studies, Criminal Justice3, English Studies, Environmental Geography, Gender Equality and Social Justice, Geography, History1, Indigenous Studies, Liberal Arts4, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religions and Cultures, Social Welfare and Social Development2

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1 plus four additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31.

Majors: Computer Science, Mathematics

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Math 31; one of Math 30-1 or 30-2 plus two additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31.

1 Applicants interested in the Bachelor of Arts (History) with an Orientation to a Master of Arts in History require a minimum average of 80% for admission consideration. This is a highly competitive, limited enrollment program. The average required for admission may be higher than the stated minimum.

2 Nipissing also offers a joint Bachelor of Arts (Social Welfare and Social Development)/Social Service Worker diploma with Canadore College. Students in this program will spend one year at Canadore and graduate with both their degree and diploma in 4 years.

3 Streams available: Corrections and Community Justice Services (collaborative with Canadore), Criminal Justice Studies, Criminology, Policing (collaborative with Canadore).

4 3-year program only. Students must select two minors by the end of first-year.

Bachelor of Business Administration

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1 plus four additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31. Two of Math 30-1, Math 30-2 and Math 31 are recommended.  Applicants without two maths will be required to complete MATH 1911 and/or MATH 1912 in their first year.

Students select an area of concentration at the end of first year: Accounting,  Entrepreneurship and Innovation Leadership, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing

Co-op available after first year

Bachelor of Commerce (Distance)

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1 plus four additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31. 

Offered through our online learning platform, Blackboard.

You can complete the program in one of three ways or a combination of two or more of the options available to you. 

Options available are:

  • Take courses delivered purely online, which will allow you the most flexibility to study on your own schedule. 
  • Take courses delivered SYNC (synchronous) online. This is a live streamed class, which is scheduled during the evening between 6-9pm between Monday-Friday.
  • Take courses onsite at one of our partner college campuses. If you reside near one of our four college partners, Algonquin, Centennial, Lambton or St. Clair, you can choose to register for a Nipissing Bachelor of Commerce course delivered on that campus. All scheduled classes run between 5pm-9pm, Monday to Friday.

Bachelor of Fine Arts

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1 plus four additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31.

Students admitted to the BFA are required to successfully complete the BFA Portfolio Assessment the year prior to their final year of study in order to remain in the BFA program.

Bachelor of Physical and Health Education

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%1

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Biology 30 plus three additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31. Chemistry 30 and one of Math 30-1, Math 30-2 or Math 31 are recommended.

1 The BPHE program is a highly competitive, limited enrollment program. The average required for admission may be higher than the stated minimum.

Bachelor of Science

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Major: Biology

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Biology 30; Chemistry 30; one of Math 30-1 or Math 31 plus one additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Computer Science

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Math 31; one of Math 30-1 or Math 30-2; one of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, or Physics 30 plus one additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Data Science, Mathematics

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Math 31; Math 30-1; one of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, or Physics 30 plus one additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Environmental Biology and Technology

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Biology 30; Chemistry 30; one of Math 30-1, Math 31 or Physics 30 plus one additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Environmental Science

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Chemistry 30; one of Math 30-1 or Math 31; one of Biology 30 or Physics 30 plus one additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Environment and Physical Geography

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; one of Math 30-1, Math 30-2, or Math 31; one of Chemistry 30, or Physics 30 plus two additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Liberal Science1

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; two of Chemistry 30, Mathematics (Math 30-1 or Math 31) or Physics 30 plus two additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31.

Major: Psychology

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; one of Math 30-1, Math 30-2, or Math 31; one of Biology 30, Chemistry 30, or Physics 30 plus one additional academic Grade 12 course numbered 30 or 31.

1 3-year program only. Students must select two minors by the end of first-year.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%1

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1; Biology 30; Chemistry 30 plus two additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31. One of Math 30-1, Math 30-2, or Math 31 is recommended.

Bachelor of Social Work

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Admission Requirements: English 30 or ELA 30-1 (with a minimum grade of 70%) plus four additional academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31.

During Year 2 of the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program, students must apply for admission consideration to the professional years (Years 3 and 4) of the program.  Admission to the first or second year of the BSW program does not guarantee acceptance into the professional years.

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Commerce

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Admission Requirements: The regular requirements for the BA or BSc major to which you are interested in applying to.

Undergraduate Degree with Concurrent Education

Minimum Average for Admission Consideration:

70%

Admission Requirements: The regular requirements for the Honours undergraduate program you select to complete with Concurrent Education. In addition, you will need to present English 30 or ELA 30-1 with a minimum grade of 70% and one of Math 20-1, Math 20-2, Math 30-1, Math 30-2 or Math 31 with a minimum grade of 60%.

Divisions available: Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate, and Intermediate/Senior
