Nipissing helping to make music in Brantford

Nipissing University’s Schulich School of Education, Brantford campus, is going to help local teachers and students make beautiful music together thanks to the Let’s Make Music Conference, taking place on October 1.

The conference, part of the community wide celebrations for National Culture Days, will feature a variety of music education workshops offered by a broad range of musicians and music educators from within the community and across the province.

As part of the National Culture Days celebration (September 30 – October 2), the conference is free of charge and open to any interested stakeholders from the community including, education students, classroom teachers, music school instructors, community choir directors, daycamp leaders and others.

“Our vision for this conference is to be a catalyst for creating positive music education experiences for our students and for teachers in Brantford and in surrounding communities,” said Dr. Christina Grant, assistant professor – Music education, Schulich School of Education, who helped organize the conference. “Music can be truly transformative for students and can really help them grow creatively. We are leading the charge in music education and working to provide classroom teachers with practical and useful strategies for creating meaningful musical experiences for their students.”

The Let’s Make Music conference will feature two sets of workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. In each of the ninety minute time slots, participants have the opportunity to sign up for one of six free workshops. Topics include Boomwackers, Bucket Drumming, Glee Choir for the Primary Classroom, Introduction to Guitar in the Classroom, and Stomp the Yard! These workshops are designed with the non-music specialist in mind and will be of interest to anyone with a love of music.

Workshops will be held at the Schulich School of Education’s 52 Wellington Street building in the heart of downtown Brantford.
