Nipissing grad and staffer shaving head to fight cancer

Genevieve De Bruyn, Supervisor, Residence Life, is shaving her head on September 30 in recognition of the struggle of people fighting the battle of their life against cancer.

In October, the newly shorn De Bruyn will participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Light the Night Walk in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

De Bruyn will donate her hair to make wigs for cancer patients. As well, she is aiming to raise $5,000 to support the two causes above.   The fight is a personal one for De Bruyn.

“In my lifetime I have lost three family members, representing both sides of my family, to long fought battles with breast cancer.  Breast cancer is a disease that predominantly affects women and is a battle that can be won,” she said. “While I was in university, my father was diagnosed with leukemia, and fought this disease with his signature determination, through a stem cell transplant and many bouts of rejection. This year our family will celebrate his fifth year of being cancer-free, and our second year of participating in the Light the Night Walk!”
