Former Canadian Ambassador to the UN on campus
Nipissing welcomes Ambassador Paul Heinbecker to campus for a special lecture on Getting Back in the Game: Has Canada lost its place in the world? on Tuesday, November 22 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in room A137.Drawing on his book of the same title, Heinbecker takes aim at the argument that decades of neglect and inattention have rendered Canadian foreign policy ineffective at best or non-existent at worst, denying Canada a seat at the ‘grown-ups’ table of international power and diplomacy. According to Heinbecker, Canada still has an important part to play in international affairs and he will present his vision for a future in which this country plays a key role in the rehabilitation of global governance.
The lecture is organized by the Nipissing Branch of the Canadian International Council. It is free of charge and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.
Heinbecker is Canada’s former Ambassador to the United Nations. During a long career with the Department of External Affairs he was posted to diplomatic missions in Ankara, Stockholm, and Paris. He also served as Canada’s Ambassador to Germany. He is now the Director of the Centre for Global Relations at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University as well as a Distinguished Fellow of International Relations at the Centre for International Governance and Innovation (CIGI) in Waterloo.
